Media Watchdog Raises Data Privacy Concerns Over Google-Pakistan Deal
Islamabad-based media watchdog Freedom Network has called for immediate transparency from Google and the Pakistan government regarding their recent partnership, citing significant Google Pakistan data privacy concerns. In an open letter issued on September 16, 2026, the organization welcomed Google’s decision to open an office in Pakistan and the signing of related agreements, but expressed apprehension over the lack of publicly available details concerning user privacy, potential surveillance, and access to personal data.
The watchdog’s critique centers on ensuring that the collaboration strengthens Pakistan’s digital economy without creating avenues for unrestricted access to citizens’ information or censorship. Demands for Transparency on Agreement Details
Freedom Network has pressed both Google and the government to disclose the exact contents of all signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), agreements, and contracts. The watchdog also sought to ascertain if the agreements contain any undisclosed commitments concerning access to user data, content, metadata, or government databases.
